Me: In the spirit of the summit, I point to the political down side of some discussion, not that politics is bad, but a process. Much like the Laffer Curve, it depends on which side you are on. Laffer seems to misuse his own curve and extend it to all taxes...

Flat metaphor
Me(cont)...while a flat tax may not be bad, what it is and where it starts is what matters. Even Milton Friedman apparently in the Libertarian wing, suggested a Negative tax. I would love to have the opportunity, ask Nobel winner Stieglitz(about these)

Me: Apparently out of time, but the metaphor of the "Invisible Hand" of Adam Smith is equivalent to the Laffer Curve at least in how you look at it. There is a real curve and a real hand, although it does depend on individuals to use it and which side your are on. i.e. Neo-Keynsian or more of the change

Me: Someday. But did you hear Thom Hartmann with Laffer and Stieglitz? More of your point... please. Mine may have been missed. I might quibble with the (my) equivalence, but not how we look at it mattering. Being on one side of the Laffer Curve statistically, as in raising or lowering taxes(or rather income), matters. Yet, there being no hand really, but the hand the individual has in creating government and corporations is what I meant. Not that they are Leviathans, woops other league (of a book), but it is important to note that Wealth of Nations was written in 1776 so we really have created a hand.

A collegue recently commented on the difficulty or the desire to be objective.  This nails perspectivism on the head, or is it the cross?  From neo-perspectivism through neo-nuanced and neo-platonic we do have a dynamic*** of global balance.  More sorting later*.    Thus spoke Niche?

BTW: Under the Flip link there is an accounting or statistical trick that is not unknown to the debate.  I won't play upon it, but it involves the "average tax cut" versus "the middle-income American."  It is mathematical hyperbole as well as reasonable, where reality is even more confusing.  It is more accurate to say that the richest are paying a lesser per cent of their gross (actual tax rate) than any other income category after the  standard deductions and other taxes are accounted for.]

Maybe that Obama or the Democratic congress were the savior. Not that unnatural selection(Cherry Pickinghatchet jobs, by George[no Ben]) may be able to tell a different** story.

Some have said the market has some form of intelligence, Adam Smith aside, if that is the case the Obama was the cure for what Ailes the economy. Or it could just be a cycle, NOT!***

While others may be Tea Party Republicans or Libertarian Free Marketeers, to label or not to label that is the question. Whether is is nobler in the minds... Regardless we can associate 3rd partiers that may or may not associate with a party as having common strains* if not roots.

BTW: whatever happened to the Gatorade for Carrol? I guess that is for college. But it seams a crack at the changes or no whine team. But in regards to the whine, I know parties that did not think a losing teams should go to the playoffs, but it is the way the rules were made. It is the process that matters whether you like it or not. Results of course matter, but you can't always change them.

Revolutionary Hospitals (and Back Again)

Recently a health reform critic(kindly put) claimed that the founding fathers had hospitals and did not mention them in the constitution(awkwardly put), but I cannot adequately paraphrase the rhetoric. But I did wonder at the time if it was accurate. Yesterday NPI, has a different angle on health care reform and technical advances and the baby boom face of more than half of recipients of health care. But an auxiliary question came to mind. When did health care become for profit? But the real question is when did health insurance become for profit? My problem is that there is always a deeper question. Our problem is that too many have the wrong answers*.

Some have such a weak definition of capitalism that it is the nature of economics since the public market. Others don't even realize what the "invisible hand" means? I have not fully read Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, but at least I know he waved it. But I forgot who recently said, it is called the "Invisible Hand" because it is not there ***. While other's still... [trailing off] I might have been heading to a more substantial answer, but my point is that some people get caught up in the debate between dirty words and the only word. Too many are taking sides, especially when it comes to the word "progressive" by playing on fears and taking change for granted, and passing the buck, but not the money**.

* and without picking sides I would add: too many feel they have the only answer. At least when it comes to history and what we are based on, with intentions to move forward.

** ironically these last two links have a good point in common(well not exactly): but in regards to the baseline, the blogger admits to some essentials or entitlements if you will, at least outside their argument for the need for profit, while Milton Friedman (a Libertarian) suggests a negative income tax to balance the social responsibility of companies to make profits. And entitlements are the real subject for the operating table, but so might be the flat tax and overall safety net reform. Actually speaking of dirty words, reform is not the word, adjustments are all that are needed to . Not that major adjustments might need to be considered in regard to globalization and world finance and diplomacy, which really scares the one word people, not to mention communities. It is not about the finger in the dike or the egg on the wall or the face of humpty dumpty, it is about the hands on the foundation of civilization.

Social Darwinism?


Is that not an inconvenient term? I know it relates to "survival of the fittest", but what is social about it? Shouldn't those that don't fit, be thrown to the wolves? Pardon my spin, but if corporations are people, what are communities? I think we are suffering from labelism and spin.

Second Spin: There seems to be something "inconvenient" about this juxtaposition, which is hard to unspin. I know it stems from "survival of the fittest", but is that not the root of being social? Unsocial Darwinism would be no more convenient. But that doesn't stop some from evolving labels and name calling.

[Speaking of Creeping, not to ding Rachel Maddow, but note the Santorum, 3F. Invisible hand anyone? What would Adam Smith say about teachers, drug companies and whose job is what. Not to confuse Popping Culture with Pope Culture. ]

Un-Exceptionalism

Are there conflicts of interest in economics today?

This may take us back to my Try-UNism, and one, none or all of punderous pondering.
[Mid-post tangent and update.]

No Twain in Try-ing. Well, I did not mean to display un-exceptionalism by example, as in "there he goes again." But my original point was that conflicts of interest are what economics and politics and government are all about. There, is that clear enough?

The "Try-UNism" is a pun in this regard. A sorting of one, none or all. Now, technically the physics might be beyond anyone to say if freedom is a force, and psychologically it may be closer to philosophy for some. But economically, I am saying that without an intent, we will be getting only where we are going, and even that is not a won way street.

My apologies for any missed links or leaps(in your scroll or click-on), but it is an ongoing process. Economics contains and is about conflicts of interest, and politics and government, play crucial rolls for (sum) people.

In regards to my lede, Un-Exceptionalism, I take it from one of the economists, who notes that any field will present conflicts of interest between the professional and the profession or the field if it has a purpose other than the individual. Well, he did not go that far, but I think he could. The "one, none or all" of my tangent relates to Exceptionalism, as it is seen, possibly in that light.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the News Stand

Before I entered Half-Priced Books***, I told myself I would not pick up anything on a whim, or rather only if it had some extra-ordinary significance.(loosely paraphrasing.)* And what do I find right on top of the bargain rack at the door? The mother of all bargains. It was a pristine copy of a very interesting book for only two dollars. It's title, The Demon Slayers and other stories: Bengali Folk Tales.

It was not till I got home that I found even more about the book. Not only was it a first edition, it was autographed by both authors. Just what is the significance beyond the luck of such a find? Well in a Pop Culture, it is related to the mother of all cultures. Not history or her story but our story.

SJM 8016 / US Attorney Scandal

Democrats must put ethics and the law back on the table.
While as Professor Domke said at one of our PCO trainings in Olympia, Democrats run to govern, and Republicans govern to run... I would say that those who are of neither party see what is not on the table. [ALSO MEANING: REPUBLICANS ARE ALWAYS CAMPAIGNING, POLITICS CAN NEVER BE OFF THE TABLE, PLAY IT FORWARD, PLAY IT HARD!]

Those on the so-called Left and those of the non-partisan middle, know what is right.
